Heya, has anyone watched The Reader, which was released back in 2008 and was nominated for a couple of awards, especially The Academy Award?? Or maybe, read the novel? Well, I just finished watched this movie. I don't really know why I wanted to watch it despite knowing the fact that it was based on a literature novel. I am not really into this kind of movies, like you know, it falls in the same category as The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Changeling and so on. Perhaps I wanted to see the role of Kate Winslet in this movie as she won a number of awards for that, including The Academy Award for Best Actress. Also, I don't really write movie reviews, but I just feel like just writing one for this. That's maybe because I am too free! :P So, here it goes, a short one.
Set during the period of postwar in Germany, this movie depicts various themes, namely love, compassion, secrets and so on. Eventhough at first, this movie portrays the eroticism and love affair between two people, a 15 year old boy, Michael and a woman double his age, Hanna, it further unfolds its twists and secrets, and thus got better. The mystery begun when one day, she disappeared from the town, away from Michael without any explanation or notification. Few years later, Michael who was then a law student sees her on a trial for an unexpected, horrendous crime as a guard at a Nazi concentration camp. Overwhelmed by guilt for having loved a criminal, he was also surprised to watch her refuse to defend her innocence and willingly accepted the accusation of being supervised other guards. It was then Michael realized that Hanna may be keeping a secret that hinders her from defending herself, a secret that may be the clear explanations for her actions in the past as well as the present. The secret could help her at the trial, but it was a secret that she considered more shameful than murder. This secret, ultimately, leads to another prominent theme which was depicted in a subtle way at the beginning. :)
